Mongavlin Castle is a ruined historic castle on the banks of the River Foyle near St. Johnston in County Donegal, Ireland. Once a stronghold of the powerful O'Donnell clan, it was especially associated with Iníon Dubh (Finola MacDonnell), the mother of the famous Gaelic leader Red Hugh O'Donnell, who used it as her chief residence during the 16th century. The castle played a role in the turbulent events surrounding the decline of Gaelic rule in Ulster and the Plantation of Ulster in the early 1600s. Following conflicts within the O'Donnell family and regional power struggles, the castle was eventually abandoned and later passed into the hands of plantation-era landowners. Today, only parts of the structure remain standing, but the ruins continue to be an important historical landmark. Its riverside setting and connections to notable figures in Irish history make Mongavlin Castle a fascinating reminder of Donegal's Gaelic past and the dramatic changes that shaped Ireland in the 16th and 17th centuries.
