The surviving structure includes a fortified tower, gatehouse, and defensive bawn wall, reflecting the military architecture of the period. Over the centuries, it was associated with figures such as Sir John Travers, the Cheevers family, and Edmund Ludlow, a prominent supporter of Oliver Cromwell. Today, Monkstown Castle is a protected national monument and an interesting local landmark that offers visitors a glimpse into Ireland’s medieval past. It is also linked to local folklore, with legends claiming the castle is haunted by nuns seen along its walls at night.
