Montgrí Castle
Spain, Spain
Montgrí Castle stands atop the Montgrí massif in Torroella de Montgrí, Baix Empordà, Girona province, Catalonia, Spain, constructed between 1294 and 1301 on King James II of Aragon's orders.
Built to monitor and counter the rebellious counts of Empúries amid territorial disputes, this unfinished fortress features robust 3-meter-thick granite walls rising 13 meters, cylindrical towers, and a strategic layout dominating the Empordà plain and Mediterranean coast.
Never fully completed due to resolved conflicts, it transitioned from military outpost to regional symbol, now accessible by a steep 45-minute hike along the GR-92 coastal path and protected as a Cultural Asset of National Interest.
