Originally constructed in 1640 during the Catalan Revolt as a simple quadrangular fort in just 30 days, it was rebuilt in 1751 by engineer Juan Martín Cermeño into its current irregular trapezoidal design with four bastions, zigzag ramparts, a deep moat, and cistern for water supply.
Serving as a prison during conflicts like the Spanish Civil War and War of the Spanish Succession, it now functions as a museum and cultural center preserving its military history while hosting exhibitions and events.
