Moorstown Castle is a well-preserved late medieval tower house located near Clonmel in County Tipperary, Ireland. Built in the 15th century by the Keating family, it is notable for its unusual circular design, a rare feature among Irish tower houses, which were typically rectangular. The castle consists of a four-storey circular keep enclosed within a fortified courtyard, or bawn, with defensive towers and a gatehouse. Its architecture includes features such as musket loops, a spiral staircase, guardrooms, and defensive openings designed to protect its inhabitants during turbulent periods of Irish history. Associated with the prominent Keating family and possibly linked to the historian Geoffrey Keating, the castle later passed to other landowners following the Cromwellian era. Today, Moorstown Castle remains one of County Tipperary’s most distinctive medieval landmarks and is admired for its remarkably intact structure and historical significance.
