Mount Ijen (Blue Fire)
East Java, Indonesia
Mount Ijen, or Kawah Ijen, in East Java is a place where Earth’s raw power meets surreal beauty. Towering at 2,386 meters, this active stratovolcano is famed for two extraordinary phenomena: its turquoise acidic crater lake—the largest of its kind in the world—and the elusive blue fire, a rare natural spectacle caused by ignited sulfuric gases that burn electric blue in the darkness.
To witness the blue fire, adventurers begin their trek around midnight from the Paltuding base camp. The 3-kilometer hike to the crater rim is steep but manageable, and from there, a more challenging descent into the crater reveals the glowing flames dancing near sulfur vents. This phenomenon is visible only before dawn, making timing and safety gear—especially gas masks—essential. By sunrise, the scene transforms.
The eerie glow fades, revealing the crater’s vivid lake, shrouded in mist and framed by jagged volcanic walls. Nearby, sulfur miners carry heavy loads up treacherous paths, a testament to human endurance in one of the world’s harshest working environments.
