Mountlong Castle

Republic of Ireland, Ireland

Mountlong Castle is a historic ruined fortified house in County Cork, Ireland, situated on high ground overlooking Oyster Haven and the Belgooly estuary near Kinsale. It was built in 1631 by John Long and is considered a notable example of the transition from medieval defensive tower houses to more comfortable seventeenth-century fortified residences. The castle was designed with a rectangular central block and four square corner towers, combining residential features such as large mullioned windows with defensive elements including gun loops. Its architecture closely resembles nearby Monkstown Castle and reflects English influences that became common in Ireland during that period. Although intended as a prestigious family home, Mountlong Castle had a short period of occupation. Historical sources indicate that it was burned during the conflicts of the 1640s, likely around 1643, and it has remained a ruin ever since. Today, parts of the eastern towers and much of the main structure still stand, making it a striking landmark and an important example of Ireland’s seventeenth-century architectural heritage.
