Mramornyy Kan'on

Ruskeala, Republic of Karelia, Russia, Russia

The Mramornyy Kan'on (Marble Canyon) in Ruskeala, Republic of Karelia, is one of Russia’s most famous natural and historical attractions.

Located within Ruskeala Mountain Park, the canyon was originally a marble quarry that supplied stone for many of the grand buildings and monuments of Saint Petersburg, including parts of Saint Isaac's Cathedral and Kazan Cathedral. Today, the former quarry is filled with remarkably clear water and surrounded by steep white and gray marble cliffs, creating a striking landscape.

Underground tunnels, caves, and flooded galleries add to its unique character, while the surrounding forests enhance its scenic beauty. A major tourist destination in Karelia, the canyon offers opportunities for walking, boating, cave tours, and sightseeing throughout the year. Its combination of industrial heritage, crystal-clear waters, and dramatic marble formations makes it one of the most picturesque places in northwestern Russia.
