Mulranny Beach
Ireland, Ireland
Mulranny Beach is a stunning Blue Flag sandy beach located just southwest of the seaside village of Mulranny in County Mayo, Ireland, on the Wild Atlantic Way near Clew Bay.
It features a long, expansive stretch of golden soft sand backed by multi-hued pink pebbles and dunes, with magical views across Clew Bay toward Clare Island and the Nephin Mountain Range. The beach is approximately 30 kilometers from Westport, about 15 minutes from Achill Island and Ballycroy National Park, and 25 minutes from Westport, making it a perfect base for exploring west Mayo.
Mulranny Beach is popular for relaxing, swimming, walking, windsurfing, and kayaking, with lifeguards on duty from June to August each summer and high water quality assured by its Blue Flag status. Facilities include a small car park with space for campers, clean public toilets, information and map boards, an access ramp for disabled visitors (though there are no disabled toilet facilities), and picnic facilities.
The area behind the beach features a rare machair landscape of fertile, low-lying grassy sand plains and saltmarsh, which is of scientific interest and rich in flora, fauna, and birdlife, including waders, terns, gulls, oystercatchers, snipes, and the rare greater yellow bumblebee.
