Muralla de El Barco de Ávila
El Barco de Ávila, Spain, Spain
Muralla de El Barco de Ávila is a medieval defensive wall from the 12th century in El Barco de Ávila, Ávila province, Spain, built under Raymond of Burgundy—the same figure behind the walls of Ávila, Salamanca, and Segovia—to protect the old town.
It follows a pentagonal layout starting from the local castle, featuring advanced towers for defense and two original Romanesque gates, though only one survives today. The remaining Puerta del Ahorcado, rebuilt in the 16th century and originally called Puerta de Piedrahita or de Ávila, got its grim name after a unpopular mayor was hanged there.
