Muralla del Cerro de San Cristobal
Almería, Spain, Spain
Muralla del Cerro de San Cristóbal forms part of Almería's ancient Islamic city walls from the 11th century Taifa era under King Jayrán, stretching across the strategic hilltop opposite the Alcazaba to enclose and defend the medina with thick 3-meter-wide, 5-meter-high stone sections and seven towers—three square Arab originals and four later circular Christian additions by Alfonso VII in 1147. This impregnable facing position saw Templars hold it briefly after 1147's conquest before Almohad recapture in 1157, and Aragonese forces under Jaime II used it in 1309 to launch catapult attacks during a six-month siege, leaving stone projectiles still visible nearby. Integrated into the larger Jayrán walls—Spain's longest surviving Arab urban enclosure—it was slated for demolition in 1855's Madoz disamortization but persists as a protected Bien de Interés Cultural with ruins offering panoramic city and bay views.
