Murallas de Arjona
Arjona, Spain, Spain
Murallas de Arjona are remnants of the Almohad-era defensive walls encircling the historic hilltop town of Arjona in Jaén province, Spain, originally featuring around 22 towerons and two prominent albarrana towers—one octagonal—built in the late 12th century atop pre-Roman, Roman, and earlier Islamic fortifications.
Protecting the alcázar and adapting to the rugged terrain with an outer boat-shaped enclosure, these walls included well-defended gates and parapets, with materials reused in later Christian structures like the Iglesia de Santa María after the 1244 conquest.
Surviving fragments along Paseo de los Mártires, including stepped buttresses and a preserved cistern, were declared a Monument in 1993, though recent partial collapses highlight ongoing conservation needs amid the site's layered history.
