Murphystown Castle
Dublin, Ireland, Ireland
Murphystown Castle is the remains of a medieval tower house located in the Murphystown area of south Dublin, near Glencairn House, the official residence of the British Ambassador to Ireland. Today, only fragments of two thick granite walls survive, but they provide evidence of a once substantial fortified structure that formed part of Dublin’s medieval landscape. Archaeological investigations suggest the castle was built between the late 12th and 13th centuries and was strategically positioned on a granite outcrop, with defensive features including enclosing walls. The castle had fallen into ruin by the 18th century, and much of its stone was later removed for reuse in nearby construction. Although only partial remains are visible today, Murphystown Castle is an important historical site that offers a glimpse into the area’s medieval heritage.
