Vasilyevsky Island is a historic district forming the southwestern tip of St. Petersburg's central area in Russia, originally envisioned by Peter the Great around 1710-1720 as the city's new heart with canals and grand boulevards modeled after Amsterdam.

Early developments included Menshikov Palace, the Kunstkammer museum, and Twelve Colleges for bureaucracy, though Peter's sailboat transport insistence and later shifts to the southern bank limited growth until the 18th century.

Today, it's renowned for the iconic Strelka embankment with Rostral Columns offering Neva River panoramas, the Stock Exchange neoclassical complex, St. Petersburg State University buildings, and landmarks like St. Andrew's Cathedral amid academic institutions and residential areas blending Baroque, Empire, and Soviet architecture.
