Näs Castle
Sweden, Sweden
Näs Castle consists of ruins from one of Sweden's oldest royal residences, situated on the southern tip of Visingsö island in Lake Vättern, Jönköping County.
Constructed in the 12th century likely by King Sverker I or his son Karl Sverkersson, it served as a strategic stronghold and home for multiple early Swedish kings including Sverker II and Magnus III Ladulås, who died there in 1290 amid civil strife.
Pledged to Denmark in 1318 by King Birger Magnusson, it was destroyed by fire during ensuing conflicts, leaving only foundations and walls visible today as an accessible archaeological site with interpretive signage.
