National Monument (Monas)
Jakarta, Indonesia
The National Monument, known as Monas, rises proudly from the heart of Merdeka Square in Central Jakarta as a towering symbol of Indonesia’s independence and national identity. Standing at 132 meters, this obelisk-shaped monument was conceived by President Sukarno and constructed between 1961 and 1975 to commemorate the country’s struggle for freedom from Dutch colonial rule.
Its design, inspired by the traditional Indonesian symbols of the lingga and yoni, reflects the unity of masculine and feminine forces and the enduring spirit of the nation. Atop the monument blazes the Flame of Independence, a 14-meter bronze sculpture coated in 50 kilograms of gold leaf, representing the undying passion of the Indonesian people.
At the base of Monas lies the National History Museum, where 51 dioramas chronicle Indonesia’s journey from prehistoric times through colonial resistance to modern nationhood. Visitors can also ascend to the observation deck at 115 meters via an elevator, where panoramic views of Jakarta’s sprawling cityscape unfold in every direction.
Below the flame, the Hall of Independence houses sacred relics, including the original text of the Proclamation of Independence and a golden map of the archipelago, all set within a solemn chamber that plays Sukarno’s recorded voice reading the proclamation.
