The granite and brick stronghold withstood attacks during conflicts like the Scanian War and Great Northern War, notably repelling Danish admiral Peter Tordenskjold's 1719 assault despite heavy bombardment, and later served as a prison until 1869. Today, accessible only by boat, it functions as a museum, restaurant, and event venue, drawing visitors to explore its military history and panoramic views.
