Nimrud, located near Mosul in Iraq's Nineveh Governorate, is the ancient Assyrian city of Kalhu (biblical Calah), a major capital from around 1350 BC to 610 BC.
Positioned strategically where the Tigris River meets the Great Zab, it spanned 360 hectares and served as a thriving trade hub under kings like Ashurnasirpal II, who rebuilt it as his capital in the 9th century BC with grand palaces, temples, and sculptures including lamassu guardians. Excavations since the 19th century uncovered bas-reliefs, ivories, and cuneiform tablets, though the site suffered severe destruction by ISIS in 2015 using bulldozers and explosives.
Today, its ruins highlight Assyrian empire's architectural splendor and cultural legacy, with restoration efforts underway.
