The Nineveh Ruins near Mosul are the remains of one of the most important cities of the ancient world and the former capital of the Neo-Assyrian Empire.

Located on the eastern bank of the Tigris River, Nineveh grew into one of the largest and wealthiest cities on Earth during the 7th century BCE, becoming a major center of government, culture, religion, and trade. The site contains the remains of massive city walls, monumental gates, palaces, temples, and the famous library of Ashurbanipal, which preserved thousands of clay tablets and greatly expanded our knowledge of ancient Mesopotamian civilization.

King Sennacherib transformed Nineveh into a magnificent imperial capital with impressive architecture and advanced water systems. In 612 BCE, the city was destroyed by a coalition of Babylonians, Medes, and other groups, leading to the collapse of the Assyrian Empire. Today, the ruins remain one of Iraq’s most significant archaeological sites, offering valuable insights into the history, art, and achievements of ancient Mesopotamia.
