Verified Nyköpingshus

Nyköping, Sweden, Sweden

Nyköpingshus, located in Nyköping along the river in Södermanland, Sweden, originated as a 12th-century defensive tower expanded into a major medieval fortress by Birger Jarl in the late 13th century.

Famous for the infamous 1317 Nyköping Banquet where King Birger imprisoned his brothers Dukes Erik and Valdemar, sparking civil war and partial demolition of the castle, it later saw restorations under figures like Bo Jonsson Grip and Gustav Vasa, who added a surviving round cannon tower.

Rebuilt as a Renaissance palace by Duke Charles (later Charles IX) in the late 16th century, it burned in 1665 and remains partly in ruins today, housing Sörmland Museum exhibitions and summer reenactments of its dramatic history.
