O’Dohertys Keep
Republic of Ireland, Ireland
O’Doherty’s Keep is a historic tower house located in Buncrana, County Donegal, on the banks of the River Crana near Lough Swilly. It served as one of the main residences of the O’Doherty clan, who ruled the Inishowen Peninsula from the early 1300s until 1608. Most historians believe the surviving structure dates mainly from the 15th century, although the site may have been fortified earlier. Despite its name, it is not a true castle keep but a medieval tower house, a type of fortified residence commonly used by Gaelic chieftains in Ireland. The building played a significant role during the turbulent period of Irish history surrounding Sir Cahir O’Doherty’s rebellion against English rule in 1608. Following the rebellion, the tower was captured and burned by Crown forces. Today, O’Doherty’s Keep stands as a ruined but important national monument and a symbol of Buncrana’s heritage. Surrounded by scenic parkland, it attracts visitors interested in Irish history, medieval architecture, and the legacy of the O’Doherty clan.
