Old Strancally Castle
Knockanore, County Waterford, Ireland, Ireland
Old Strancally Castle is a medieval ruin located near Knockanore in County Waterford, overlooking a dramatic bend of the River Blackwater. Believed to date from the Anglo-Norman period, it occupied a strategic rocky outcrop and was later associated with the powerful FitzGerald Earls of Desmond. The castle played a role in the turbulent history of Munster and changed hands several times after the Desmond Rebellions of the late 16th century. It was later linked to Sir Walter Raleigh and other prominent landowners before eventually falling into ruin. Today, only fragments of the original fortress survive, including parts of a tower house and hall built into the rocky landscape. Its picturesque riverside setting and long history make Old Strancally Castle an evocative reminder of medieval life and conflict in County Waterford.
