Olvera Castle
Olvera, Spain, Spain
Olvera Castle, perched on a 623-meter rock outcrop in the whitewashed town of Olvera, Cádiz province, Andalusia, Spain, was originally constructed in the late 12th century by the Nasrid Emirate of Granada as a key defensive outpost along its border with Castile. Seized by King Alfonso XI in 1327, Christians rebuilt it into an irregular triangular fortress adapting to the cliff's shape, featuring thick mampostería walls, a rectangular keep tower with barrel-vaulted ceilings, a barbican-protected gateway, a subterranean enclosure, two cisterns, and turrets for panoramic surveillance. This blend of Moorish origins and Christian modifications highlights its Reconquista-era role, earning designation as a Bien de Interés Cultural in 1982 with sweeping views of the surrounding countryside.
