Oreshek Fortress
Russia, Russia
Oreshek Fortress, located on Orekhovy Island at the Neva River's source into Lake Ladoga near Shlisselburg, Russia, began as a wooden Novgorod stronghold built in 1323 by Prince Yury of Moscow to guard vital trade routes to the Baltic Sea.
Rebuilt in stone by 1352 under Archbishop Vasily Kalika after Swedish destruction, it changed hands repeatedly during Russo-Swedish conflicts, renamed Nut堡 (Nöteborg) under Swedish rule from 1612 until Peter the Great's 1702 recapture, when it became Shlisselburg ("Key-Fortress") with enhanced bastions named for his allies.
Famous as Russia's "Bastille," it served from the 18th century as a political prison holding tsars' rivals, revolutionaries like the Decembrists, and Lenin's brother before WWII defense and Soviet damage; now a museum within St. Petersburg's UNESCO zone featuring restored towers, cells, and artillery exhibits.
