Palace of Charles V
Granada, Spain, Spain
The Palace of Charles V in Granada, Spain, is a magnificent Renaissance palace built within the Alhambra complex starting in 1527 on orders from Holy Roman Emperor Charles V, shortly after his marriage to Isabel of Portugal.
Designed by Pedro Machuca—possibly trained under Michelangelo—this architectural masterpiece features a striking square exterior (63 meters per side) enclosing a circular courtyard (30 meters in diameter) with 32 Doric columns on the ground floor and 32 Ionic columns above, flanked by grand facades and an octagonal chapel.
Construction halted around 1637 due to funding issues and the Morisco Revolt, leaving it roofless until 20th-century restorations by Leopoldo Torres Balbás completed the work by 1958, now housing the Alhambra Museum and Fine Arts Museum amid stunning Nasrid surroundings.
