Pancorbo Castle
Spain, Spain
Pancorbo Castle is a ruined 9th-century fortress dramatically perched on a rocky crest dominating the strategic Pancorbo pass in Burgos province, Castilla y León, Spain.
Built around 882 by Count Diego Rodríguez Porcelos to defend Castile's frontier against Muslim incursions, it withstood sieges like Al-Mundhir's failed 882 assault alongside nearby strongholds, passing through Navarrese, Castilian royal, and noble hands including the Counts of Salinas before joining Burgos's señorío in 1380.
Briefly restored in the late 18th century alongside Santa Engracia fortress, it was torched in 1835 during the First Carlist War, leaving only evocative wall remnants, rock-hewn stairs, and a stone bridge between crags amid its impregnable natural defenses.
