Parkavonear Castle is a rare 13th-century Anglo-Norman castle located at Aghadoe near Killarney in County Kerry, overlooking the famous Lakes of Killarney. Unlike most Norman castles in Ireland, which are rectangular, Parkavonear is notable for its unusual circular design, making it one of the country's most distinctive medieval fortifications. Built after the Anglo-Norman invasion of Ireland, the castle originally had an elevated entrance that could be accessed by ladder for added security. Its thick stone walls, internal staircase, fireplace, and surrounding earthworks show how it functioned as both a defensive stronghold and a residence. Today, Parkavonear Castle is a protected National Monument and forms part of the historic Aghadoe heritage area, which also includes an early medieval monastery and church ruins. Visitors appreciate the site for its unusual architecture, historical significance, and outstanding views across the Killarney landscape.
