Pátzcuaro, in the state of Michoacán, Mexico, is a picturesque colonial town set on the shores of Lake Pátzcuaro, known for its mix of Spanish‑style architecture and deep Purépecha Indigenous culture. Founded in the 16th century, it became an early missionary and administrative center and today is often called the “soul” of the region’s highland plateau. The town is famous for its beautifully preserved central plaza, churches, and cobbled streets, as well as for its role in the Day of the Dead, when lakeside cemeteries are lit by candles and visitors flock in for traditional altars, music, and offerings. Pátzcuaro also serves as a gateway to nearby villages and the lake itself, where boat trips to islands like Janitzio let visitors see local fishing, crafts, and the iconic statue of José María Morelos rising from the water.
