Penningby Slott
Sweden, Sweden
Penningby Slott, a well-preserved medieval castle, sits in Länna parish, Norrtälje Municipality, Uppland, about 70 km north of Stockholm near Edsviken bay.
First mentioned in the 1380s and fortified in the late 15th century by Lady Birgitta Tordsdotter Bonde, it features a distinctive twin-house design with a massive tower added before the 1550s by Lars Turesson (Tre Rosor), plus Renaissance elements like a round salon.
Owned by noble families including Bonde and linked to figures like regent Svante Nilsson, it suffered a fire in 1831 but was restored in the 1950s and designated a cultural heritage site in 1980, now open to summer visitors with guided tours.
