Pernštejn Castle
South Moravian Region, Czech Republic (Czechia)
Pernštejn Castle in the South Moravian Region of the Czech Republic was founded in the late 13th century by the Lords of Medlov, who later took the name Pernštejn. Built on a rocky hill with steep slopes protecting it from three sides, the castle was designed for defense with a moat, drawbridge, thick walls, and a distinctive round tower called Barborka.
It underwent major expansions and fortifications through the 15th and 16th centuries under the Pernštejn family, who were influential Moravian nobility. The castle is notable for combining Gothic and Renaissance architectural features, including marble window and door frames which earned it the nickname "marble castle." Despite various historical conflicts, Pernštejn remained unconquered, including during the Thirty Years’ War.
Ownership later transferred to other noble families like the Lichtenstein-Kastelcorn and Mitrovský families. Today, Pernštejn Castle stands as a remarkably well-preserved medieval fortress showcasing its historical and architectural grandeur amid the wooded Moravian Highlands.
