The Peter and Paul Fortress in Saint Petersburg, Russia, marks the city's official founding on May 16, 1703 (Old Style), when Peter the Great personally laid the first stone on Zayachy (Hare) Island in the Neva River delta to defend against Swedish naval threats during the Great Northern War.

Originally an earthen bastion fort designed by European engineers like Gaetan Chiaveri and later refined by Domenico Trezzini into a stone hexagon with six bastions named for Peter's associates (Menshikov, Trubetskoy, etc.), 10-meter walls, moats, and artillery positions, it transitioned from military outpost to symbolic imperial center by the 1720s.

Its iconic Peter and Paul Cathedral (1712-1733, spire completed 1779 by A. Rinaldi) houses the Romanov dynasty tombs under a 122-meter gilded spire with a guardian angel, while structures like the Trubetskoy Bastion prison held figures from Radishchev to Lenin's brother, and it now serves as a museum complex with the Artillery Museum, Mint, and city history exhibits.
