Petrovaradin Fortress
Petrovaradin, Serbia, Serbia
Petrovaradin Fortress is a large 18th‑century bastion fortress standing on a high bluff on the right bank of the Danube River in the Petrovaradin neighborhood of Novi Sad, in the Vojvodina region of northern Serbia.
Often called the “Gibraltar of the Danube,” it was built by the Habsburg Monarchy as a massive defensive stronghold to protect the border zone against the Ottoman Empire and took about 90 years to complete, covering around 112 hectares with a complex network of ramparts, bastions, and nearly 16 kilometers of underground tunnels.
The fortress played a key military role for over two centuries, influencing control of the Danube and the wider region, and today it is demilitarized and preserved as a major cultural monument and one of Serbia’s most iconic landmarks.
It is best known as the main stage of the EXIT Festival, one of Europe’s largest music festivals, and also offers panoramic views of Novi Sad, the Danube, and the surrounding plains, plus museums, cannon‑firing demonstrations, and the fortress’s distinctive “drunken clock tower.”
