Piedra Bermeja Castle
Brihuega, Spain, Spain
The Piedra Bermeja Castle in Brihuega, Guadalajara province, Castilla-La Mancha, Spain, is a 10th-11th century Muslim fortress dramatically perched on a distinctive red rock outcrop overlooking the Tajuña River valley.
Originally gifted by King al-Mamun of Toledo to Alfonso VI around 1085, it passed to Toledo's archbishops who transformed it into a Proto-Gothic palace-fortress with elegant windows, military quarters below palatial rooms, and a parade ground later used as a cemetery.
Repurposed as a prison, it aided Philip V during the War of Succession, resisted El Empecinado in the Peninsular War, and served in the Carlist Wars before rehabilitation; today it hosts cultural exhibits amid stunning views.
