Pinamar is an upscale resort city on Argentina’s Atlantic coast in Buenos Aires Province, located about 220 miles (350 kilometers) southeast of Buenos Aires.

The name comes from combining “pine” and “mar” (sea) because the town was intentionally created between 1907 and the 1930s by planting thousands of pine trees across barren sand dunes to transform an inhospitable area into a lush seaside oasis. Unlike typical beach resorts, Pinamar has strict building codes that prohibit high-rises, preserving its unique character as a planned community where a dense pine forest stretches for miles behind wide, sandy beaches.

About 45,000 people live there year-round, but the population swells in summer when affluent residents from Buenos Aires flock there for lively beaches, watersports like windsurfing and jet skiing, beach volleyball, tennis at the Pinamar Tennis Club, and a sophisticated nightlife with bars and discos. Its deliberate blend of nature and careful urban planning has made it a sophisticated, low-key escape known for family-friendly activities, clear blue surf, and a relaxed yet elegant atmosphere.
