Polička is a historic town in the Pardubice Region of Czechia, founded in 1265 by King Přemysl Otakar II as a strategic settlement to protect the trade route between Moravia and Bohemia.

It is known for its remarkably well-preserved medieval city walls, considered some of the most extensive and intact in Central Europe, with fortifications dating back to the 14th century.

Despite its prosperity, the town endured repeated hardships including fires, plagues, military conflicts, and occupations, such as being taken and sacked during the Hussite Wars and suffering damages during the Thirty Years’ War and Silesian Wars. Polička’s population historically shifted from a mix of Czech and German inhabitants to a predominantly Czech town after the Hussite period.

It also retains cultural significance as the birthplace of the famous composer Bohuslav Martinů. The town today reflects its rich history through architecture, museums, and cultural heritage, balancing historical preservation with modern community life.
