Portlick Castle
County Westmeath, Ireland
Portlick Castle in County Westmeath, Ireland, dates back to around 1500, originally built by the Norman Dillon family who were granted the land after the Norman invasion. This medieval tower house was the principal residence for the Dillons until they lost the property in 1696 due to political conflicts following the Williamite wars.
Subsequently, the castle was sold to the Reverend Robert Smyth in 1703, whose family resided there until the mid-20th century. The Smyths added a Georgian wing and a castellated tower in the 19th century, giving the castle its distinctive twin-tower appearance. In 1861, the castle was severely damaged by fire, resulting in loss of valuable interiors, but it was restored over time.
Later owned by Australian poet Luke Whitington in the late 20th century, it was refurbished and maintained as a private residence. Portlick Castle is also reputed to be haunted by the ghost known as the "Blue Lady," adding to its rich historical lore.
