The Prambanan Temple Compounds in Central Java, Indonesia, are a magnificent ensemble of Hindu temples that stand as a testament to the grandeur of ancient Javanese architecture and religious devotion. Constructed in the 9th century during the reign of the Sanjaya Dynasty, the complex is dedicated to the Trimurti—the three principal deities of Hinduism: Brahma the Creator, Vishnu the Preserver, and Shiva the Destroyer.

The central area of the compound features three towering temples, each devoted to one of these gods, with the temple of Shiva rising to an impressive height of 47 meters, making it the tallest and most dominant structure in the complex. Surrounding the main temples are hundreds of smaller shrines and ancillary structures, originally numbering over 240, arranged in concentric squares that reflect a sophisticated understanding of sacred geometry and cosmology.

The temples are adorned with intricate bas-reliefs that narrate scenes from the Ramayana, one of the great Hindu epics, showcasing the artistic mastery of the period. The compound also includes temples dedicated to the vahanas, or animal mounts, of the gods—Nandi the bull for Shiva, Garuda the eagle for Vishnu, and Hamsa the swan for Brahma.
