Prambanan Temple
Yogyakarta/Central Java, Indonesia
Prambanan Temple, or Candi Prambanan, is a majestic 9th-century Hindu temple complex straddling the border between Yogyakarta and Central Java, Indonesia. Dedicated to the Trimūrti—Brahma the Creator, Vishnu the Preserver, and Shiva the Destroyer—it is the largest Hindu temple site in Indonesia and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The complex originally featured 240 temples, though only a fraction remain fully restored. The central courtyard houses the towering 47-meter Shiva temple, flanked by temples for Brahma and Vishnu. Intricate bas-reliefs along the temple walls narrate scenes from the Ramayana, and the layout follows the sacred Hindu mandala design, symbolizing the cosmic order.
Built by the Sanjaya dynasty around 850 CE, Prambanan was likely a political and spiritual counterpoint to the nearby Buddhist Borobudur, reflecting a period of religious coexistence and royal rivalry. After centuries of abandonment—due to volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, and political shifts—the temple was rediscovered in the 18th century and has undergone extensive restoration since the 20th century.
Today, Prambanan is not only a historical marvel but also a cultural stage.
