Ravanica Monastery
Senje, Serbia, Serbia
Ravanica Monastery, located near the village of Senje close to Ćuprija in central Serbia at the foot of the Kučaj Mountains, was founded between 1375 and 1381 by Prince Lazar Hrebeljanović as his endowment dedicated to the Ascension of the Lord.
This fortified complex, surrounded by a strong defensive wall with seven towers, marks the birthplace of the Morava school of Serbian medieval architecture, blending a trefoil base, inscribed cross plan, and five domes with intricate facades of alternating stone and brick layers adorned by rosettes, geometric patterns, floral motifs, and carved window frames.
Its frescoes, painted in phases during the late 14th century, include modified founder portraits after Lazar's death at the Battle of Kosovo in 1389, and it remains a protected Monument of Culture of Exceptional Importance housing his initial relics.
