Remains of Serpukhov Kremlin
Serpukhov, Russia, Russia
The remains of Serpukhov Kremlin consist of fragmented white-stone walls and foundations on a steep hill overlooking the Nara River confluence in Serpukhov, Moscow Oblast, Russia, originally built in 1556 under Grand Prince Vasily III as a stone fortress replacing a 1374 wooden structure to shield Moscow's southern borders from Crimean Tatar raids.
Designed with an irregular perimeter, five towers, three innovative P-shaped half-towers for flanking fire, and natural river defenses, it successfully repelled invasions until rendered obsolete, after which locals quarried its limestone in the 19th century and Bolsheviks dismantled most in 1934 for Moscow Metro construction.
Today, only a small section survives near Ulitsa Krasnaya Gora beside the 1696 Trinity Cathedral in Moscow Baroque style, serving as an evocative ruin amid a park with war memorials and panoramic city views.
