Renvyle Castle is a ruined medieval tower house located on the Renvyle Peninsula in Connemara, County Galway, on Ireland’s rugged Atlantic coast. Believed to date from the 13th or 14th century, the castle is closely associated with the O’Flaherty clan and is also linked through local tradition to the famous Irish chieftain and seafarer Grace O’Malley, often known as the “Pirate Queen of Ireland.” Today, the castle stands as a picturesque ruin overlooking the sea near White Strand beach. Parts of the structure, including sections of its tower walls, remain visible, offering a glimpse into the region’s medieval past and its history of clan rivalries and coastal defense. Although the castle is not fully preserved and public access to the interior is limited due to its fragile condition, it remains a popular landmark for visitors exploring Connemara. Its dramatic setting, historical associations, and scenic surroundings make it one of the notable heritage sites in northwest County Galway.
