Requesens Castle
Spain, Spain
Requesens Castle, located on a hill in the Albera Mountains near La Jonquera in Catalonia, Spain, originated as a medieval fortress in the late 10th century amid disputes between the counties of Empúries and Rosselló, later becoming a key stronghold for the Counts of Empúries.
Largely rebuilt between 1893 and 1899 by Counts Tomàs and Joana-Adelaida de Rocabertí in neo-medieval style as a summer residence, it features three fortified enclosures with round and square towers, battlements, machicolations, a Romanesque chapel incorporating local elements, and landscaped gardens around a central courtyard.
Preserving remnants like 12th-14th century bastion walls and a square tower, the now-abandoned yet photogenic site offers guided tours through private property, blending authentic history with romantic 19th-century revival amid scenic forests.
