Ringrone Castle

Ringrone Castle is a medieval castle ruin located near Kinsale in County Cork, Ireland, overlooking the Bandon River and the entrance to Kinsale Harbour. It was built in the early 13th century by the de Courcy family, an influential Anglo-Norman dynasty, and served as a defensive stronghold protecting the port of Kinsale and an important ferry crossing. Today, only a fragment of the original tower house survives, with a single wall rising several storeys high. Despite its ruined condition, visitors can still see architectural features such as remnants of vaulted ceilings and parts of the original doorway, offering a glimpse into its medieval design. The castle played a role during the events leading up to the Battle of Kinsale in 1601. Spanish forces occupied the site in 1600, and it was later heavily bombarded by English troops, leaving much of the structure destroyed. Although Ringrone Castle is a modest ruin today, it remains a historically significant landmark and a scenic spot, valued for its connection to Ireland’s medieval past and its views across the surrounding countryside and waterways.
