Rizal Park
Manila, Philippines
Rizal Park, also known as Luneta, is Manila’s iconic central park and the largest city park in Asia, stretching 54–60 hectares along the bayfront east of Intramuros on the shores of Manila Bay. Originally a marshland called Bagumbayan under Spanish rule, it is historically significant as the execution site of José Rizal, the Philippines’ national hero, in 1896, and today serves as a beloved tropical oasis where locals gather for strolls, sports, picnics, tai chi, chess, and concerts. The park’s centerpiece is the Rizal Monument, an elaborate bronze diorama and obelisk containing Rizal’s remains, guarded 24/7 by sentries and fronted by a 46-meter flagpole, standing as a powerful symbol of Filipino nationhood. Surrounding the monument are nearly 40 sights including the Central Lagoon with a musical fountain, Chinese and Japanese Gardens with romantic bridges and pagodas, an open-air auditorium hosting free Sunday classical concerts and Saturday rock shows, the Manila Orchidarium, and stone busts of Filipino heroes lining the lagoon. Once a parade ground where presidents addressed the people and a promenade for the colonial elite, Rizal Park has been renovated under a master plan to include a visitors center, restaurants, shops, and boutique hotels, making it both Manila’s living heart of history and its most visited green space.
