Ruinas del Castillo de Mormojón
Spain, Spain
Ruinas del Castillo de Mormojón, also known as Castillo de Torremormojón, are the weathered remnants of a medieval fortress atop a hill in Torremormojón village, Palencia province, Spain.
Originating possibly from a 10th-century watchtower linked to early Crusader influences or solidified in the 12th century as a Castile-León border defense, it endured noble feuds, Comunero sieges in 1521, and French occupation before partial demolition in 1874.
Despite 1878 national monument status and 2008 Red List endangerment, only scattered walls, modest towers turned pigeon house, and artillery-adapted gate survive after 19th-century quarrying, overlooking the rural plains near Santa María del Castillo church.
