Verified Ruïnes del castell del Puig

El Puig, Spain, Spain

Ruïnes del castell del Puig are the remains of an 11th-century Moorish fortress on a hilltop in El Puig, near Valencia, Spain, originally built to control strategic routes during Islamic rule.

Captured by El Cid in 1093 and briefly retaken by Almoravids, it became pivotal in 1237 when James I of Aragon conquered it, launching his campaign against Valencia after the Battle of El Puig that defeated a larger Muslim force.

Abandoned by the 14th century, the ruins feature stone walls and towers overlooking the town, now accessible via trails near the Gothic Monastery of Santa Maria, symbolizing the Reconquista's spiritual and military turning point.
