Saint Demetrius (King Marko Monastery)
North Macedonia, North Macedonia
Saint Demetrius Monastery, known as King Marko's Monastery, is a 14th-century Serbian Orthodox site in Markova Sušica village south of Skopje, North Macedonia, dedicated to Saint Demetrius and founded by King Vukašin in 1346 with completion and frescoes added by his son Prince Marko around 1366-1371. The single cross-shaped church features a narthex, central dome, stone iconostasis, and well-preserved frescoes depicting donors, saints, and biblical scenes, surviving Ottoman rule with minimal damage while hosting a school and scriptorium in medieval times. Today, the active complex includes lodgings, a belfry, well, bakery, mill, and rakija oven amid scenic Kitka Mountains, symbolizing resilience through Mrnjavčević family heritage.
