Saint Michael's Castle
Saint Petersburg, Russia, Russia
Saint Michael's Castle in Saint Petersburg, Russia, is a late 18th-century neoclassical palace-fortress built from 1797 to 1801 by architects Vasily Bazhenov and Vincenzo Brenna for Emperor Paul I, who sought a secure residence replacing Empress Elizabeth's wooden Summer Palace on the same site.
Named for the Romanov patron Archangel Michael, its unique facades blend French Classicism, Italian Renaissance, and Gothic elements around an octagonal courtyard, surrounded originally by moats, canals, drawbridges, and cannons for defense.
Paul was assassinated there in 1801 after just 40 days; later renamed Engineers' Castle and used as a military engineering school, it now houses the Russian Museum's art collection in restored interiors.
