Samoil's Fortress

Samuil’s Fortress is a large medieval fortress perched on the hilltop overlooking the old town of Ohrid and Lake Ohrid in North Macedonia.

It was extended and heavily fortified by Tsar Samuel of Bulgaria around the turn of the 11th century when Ohrid served as the capital of his empire, and the complex is built on the remains of earlier fortifications dating back to antiquity. The fortress covers almost the entire hill, with several kilometers of stone walls, numerous towers, and a citadel that once housed both rulers and soldiers, making it one of the largest medieval fortification systems in the region.

Today it is a major tourist attraction within the UNESCO‑listed Lake Ohrid area, offering sweeping views of the city, the deep blue lake, and the surrounding Galicica Mountains, as well as a visible reminder of Ohrid’s long strategic and political importance in Balkan history.
