San Carlos de Bariloche
Río Negro Province, Argentina
San Carlos de Bariloche is Argentina’s premier mountain resort town and South America’s most important winter sports destination, located on the southeastern shore of Lake Nahuel Huapi in Río Negro Province within the stunning Andean lake district of Patagonia. Often called “the Swiss city” for its charming chalet-style architecture introduced by Swiss immigrants in 1905, it has grown into a bustling town of about 108,000 people surrounded by glacial lakes, dense temperate forests, snow-capped peaks including Cerro Tronador (3,354 m) and the world-class Cerro Catedral ski resort, and the protected Nahuel Huapi National Park, which inspired Walt Disney’s Bambi with its pristine scenery. Tourism is the main economic driver, with nearly 800,000 visitors annually drawn to some of the world’s best skiing and snowboarding in winter (June–August), and hiking, kayaking, fishing, mountain biking, rafting and boat tours across turquoise lakes and glaciers in summer. The town is also famous for its rich Argentine chocolate, wool and leather crafts, the iconic Hillside Hotel Llao Llao overlooking the lake, the unique Bosque de Arrayanes (myrtle forest) on Isla Victoria, and scenic drives like the Circuito Chico and Circuito Grande that offer panoramic Andean views.
